Recovery unit servicing and filter replacement
Heat recovery requires regular maintenance to continue doing what it was bought for, breathable air without unnecessary dust and pollen. The basics are filter replacement, plus regular inspection of the heat exchanger and unit operation. We service units we installed as well as those from other companies.
Without servicing, the unit's performance gradually deteriorates without you noticing it immediately: the decline is usually gradual, so it is easy to get used to it. Regular inspection at predetermined intervals is therefore more reliable than waiting for an obvious problem to appear.
Filter replacement
The filter traps dust and pollen from the outdoor air before it enters the room. Generally, a replacement interval of 3-6 months is recommended; the specific frequency depends on the environment: an apartment near a busy street or during pollen season requires more frequent changes, while a quieter location allows for longer intervals. A clogged filter restricts airflow, causing the unit to operate less effectively and with reduced efficiency.
Cleaning of the unit
Apart from the filter, the interior of the unit also becomes clogged over time, fans, grilles and both supply and exhaust ducts within reach of the unit. Regular cleaning maintains airflow and reduces noise, which usually increases with accumulated dust. For decentralised units, the external grille in the façade is also cleaned, where dust and, in summer, pollen from the surroundings accumulate.
Filters in both decentralised and central units
With decentralised units, the filter is usually small and accessible directly on the unit or after removing the cover, so replacement takes just a few minutes per piece. With a central system, the filter is inside the unit at the start of both suction and exhaust, here expect to replace several pieces at once and allow some time for the service.
When to schedule service
The simplest approach is to schedule servicing in advance according to the filter replacement interval, rather than waiting for a problem to arise: a clogged filter or heat exchanger only becomes apparent externally after some time, by which point the loss of efficiency is noticeable. Regular servicing helps maintain the unit at a performance level similar to that immediately after installation.
Inspection of the heat recovery exchanger
The heat exchanger is the component that transfers heat from the exhaust air to the supply air. It is the core of the system's efficiency. During servicing, we check its condition, airtightness and whether there is any fouling that would reduce heat transfer. For enthalpy exchangers, which can transfer moisture as well as heat, we also inspect the membrane condition, as it is more sensitive to mechanical damage than a standard counterflow exchanger.
Servicing units from other companies
We also service and replace filters in decentralised and central systems installed by other companies. Just provide the unit type and brand so we can bring the correct filters and parts. We will discuss this in advance in your enquiry.
How to tell if a unit needs servicing
The most common sign is louder operation than before, this usually means a clogged filter or dust buildup on the fan. Another sign is weaker airflow from the grille, even when the unit is set to the same power level as usual. With central systems, you may also notice an odour from the ducts, especially after a longer period of inactivity. This is often a reason for inspection and cleaning.
How the service is carried out
We will arrange an appointment, check the condition of the filters and the unit on site, replace anything that is needed, and recalibrate the unit for correct performance. For central systems, we will also inspect accessible sections of the distribution network and the condition of the heat exchanger during this visit. At the end, we will inform you what to expect next and when it makes sense to return.
If we are servicing a unit from another company for the first time, expect the initial visit to take slightly longer. We need to familiarise ourselves with the specific wiring and condition of the system before starting the replacement and cleaning.
